Abigael's

1-212-575-1407 Broadway, between 38 and 39 st.
Abigael's is my favorite restaurant. The food is very good, the ambience is the best. Where else can you hear your date on a Moztei Shabbos? And big plus: There's always easy parking in the area after 7:00.
Misc: Meat, $60 - 80

Darna

1-212-721-9123 600 Columbus Ave and 89th st.
I never really like the place, but they got a new chef, and my uncle tells me the food is very good now. I should go.
Misc: Meat (French-Moroccan), $55 - 75

Domani Ristorante

1-212-717-7575 1590 1st Ave. bet 82 and 83
Perhaps.

Glatt A-La Carte

1-718-438-6675 5123 18th Ave. (between 51st & 52nd)
In Boro Park. Yes, I know that's an unusual choice, but the food is great, on par with the best I've had. Trust me. I know you won't take a Brooklyn girl there, but you can always take a Queens or 5-towns girl there. (Note: We went there a second time, and they gave us the wrong dish. I hope that sort of thing doesn't happen too often. )
Misc: Meat, $55 - 75

Gusto va Mare

1-212-583-9300 237 East 53rd Street bet. 2nd and 3rd
Shira says go to Va Bene. Dovid K and others say the portions are too small. I guess I'm probably not going to end up going here. But it is a dairy place in the city.
Misc: Dairy, $70

Haikara Grill

1-212-355-7000 63rd, bet 2nd and 3rd Ave.

An excellent restaurant, with some of the best food on this entire list. Everything's good. I liked the Haikara Mixed Grill, and I had the ribs on Shira's recommendation, and that was very good. The only problem with this place is that the have a couples section where they line you up on busier nights, and it's not very private. Also, on Motzei shabbos it's very noisy. I actually came back with a hoarse throat afterward.
Misc: Meat (Japanese), $65 - 80

La Creperie
1-212-865-7334 2608 Broadway bet. 98th and 99th Ave., hard to read sign
Thank God, another dairy restaurant in the city. I don't understand why it's so hard to find them. I ate there with Sarah, and we really thought the place had a great atmosphere, and very good food. We were there on a Motzei Shabbos, able to get a seat without reservation, but we had to wait 5 minutes. The tables are not as close together as Va Bene or MMFD, which was obviously a good thing. Order the french fries, and of course I got my usual Mahi Mahi, which was great. They have a big crepe making thing in the center of the place, like a hibachi, it's funny.
Misc: Dairy (Crepe+), $50 - 80
Le Marais
1-212-869-0900 46th bet. 5th and 6th Ave.
I've taken two girls there, and both times they had the chicken salad. I don't know what the deal is with that. The food is very good, although the portions are not especially large. But who ever polishes off the plate anyway on a first date. Sarah says you should always get the La Suprise steak. I saw a guy with it and it did look good. On more thing: It's a bit quieter upstairs than downstairs. There is always a din downstairs. I avoided Le Marais because of it.
Misc: Meat (French), $60 - 80

My Most Favorite Dessert

1-212-997-5130  120 West 45 St., bet. 6th and Broadway
Forget the dessert, the food is very good. Neither you or the girl is going to be interested in dessert. Maybe if they were smarter they would ask at the beginning of the meal what you will have for dessert. Regarding seating, it's a similar situation to Haikara Grill. They have a row of first date tables on the first floor which can make for an uncomfortable evening, especially on Motzei Shabbos. You can circumvent this by asking to be seated on the second floor. They also have outdoor seating, which I wish I'd done. Difficult to find parking. Lot is next door.
Misc: Dairy, $50 - 70 + dessert + $30 parking

Prime Grill

? ?
Never gone there, but supposedly not quiet enough for first dating.

Tevere 84

1-212-744-0210 155 84th Street 3rd and Lexington

Va Bene

1-212-517-4448 1589 2nd Ave., between 82 and 83 st.
I had a great dish there: Mahi-Mahi with Marsala sauce. Anyway, the food is great, but the tables are a bit cramped, and it's packed on Motzei Shabbos. I had to wait even with a reservation. But otherwise, it really is the best dairy food I've had. I can't say for the pasta though; I always get fish.
Misc: Dairy (Italian), $60 - 80

Second Date Restaurants

Barouge Bistro Cafe

1-212-875-9020 228 West 72nd st., bet Broadway and West End Ave
Never been there

Dougies

1-212-724-2222 72nd Street, between Broadway and Columbus?
Not for a first date, but of course this must be included in everyone's repertoire. The girl has to like spicy though.
Misc: Meat (Grill), $40 - 55

Eden Wok

1-212-787-8700 127 West 72nd Street, between Broadway and Columbus
I was not really impressed with this place. The food was not so great, and it wasn't really a first date place, in my opinion. They have hibachi grills if that interests you.
Misc: Meat (Japanese), $45 - 55

Estihana

1-212-501-0393 221 West 79th St. bet Broadway and Amsterdam
NO reservations. I haven't gone yet, but Sarah really loves it, so we have to go already.
Misc: Meat

Fuji Hana

1-718-336-3888 512 Avenue U and E. 5th
Went once on a first date. Wasn't a good idea. There are millions of little kids there on Motzei Shabbos. The food's very good though. Definitely worth a shot on a later date, if you're in Brooklyn.
Misc: Meat (Japanese), $50 - 70

Jerusalem Steakhouse II

1-718-258-8899 1319 Avenue J and E. 13th
The food is pretty decent, but you may have to wait until you feel comfortable walking with her on J. There's also another one, I think on Avenue M.
Misc: Meat (Japanese), $50 - 70

Mendy's

1-212-576-1010 61 East 34th Street, bet. Park and Madison
Great place. I'm a big fan. Ambience is not really for first dates though. And if you're taking out a Stern girl, ask for permission, because she may not want to meet all her friends there.
Misc: Meat, $40 - 60

Moshi Moshi

1-718-336-4566 1987 Coney Island Ave., bet. P and Quentin
This is a fantastic restaurant which is only a second dater by virtue of it's unfortunate central Flatbush location and it's price. The blue lighting, calm atmosphere and amazing dishes distinguish Moshi Moshi as Flatbush's best Japanese. Not that I've been everywhere, but hey, I loved the place.
Misc: Meat (Japanese), $45 - 60

Shang Chai

1-718-377-6100 2189 Flatbush Avenue
I'm not impressed with the food. At all.
Misc: Meat (Chinese), $50 - 60

Wolf and Lamb

1-212-317-1950  10 E. 48th Street, between 5th and Madison Ave
Went there once on a first date, and it was a mistake - not expensive enough, not appropriate. (The two generally go together, it seems) But I went again with Sarah, and saw first dates there (lots of fun), so I guess that is a matter of opinion. The food is pretty good. I actually get lunch from there now. They have a cheap lunch menu, which is great.
Misc: Meat (Steakhouse), $45 - 60
